Courage! You're Neither Useless nor Worthless
How to Serve
byMartin Luther King
The great civil rights leader was an initiate of the Great Brotherhood of Light sent to earth to lead the struggle for freedom and equality for the blacks and other minorities in the United States. Here Dr. King through the trance medium describes how he walked over the threshold to the other side after his assasination only to be met by a huge celebration and parade. On his triumphant return he was met by Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle who later introduced him to the trance medium. Dr. King describes his joy upon learning he could still communicate with his people from the other side. Click on the Play button and hear this incredible discourse.

Courage by the people, courage by the people, because these times will not always be as they are and when you must cry, then cry, because I tell you your tears are what are gonna wash 'em all away. Oh, there was a time when I thought we shouldn't cry, but I might as well had tried to hold back the ocean, an ocean of tears. It came to where I could barely explain why the tears were there or why they had to be there, but they were there, standin' in the eyes of everybody I knew. I looked around and I see, and I see tears here, too, standin' in these eyes, and that's okay. You gotta let them run. Because I say that God wouldn't have given use of tears if they were not there to wash our faces clean of our pain and of our guilt.
Oh, I love the Lord, too. Just like the song said. And you know what? You can love the Lord. But you might have to beg and plead a long time before he'll let you come and talk to somebody. You see, I couldn't, I couldn't just be silent up there. And when I say up there, people, I'm referrin' to a real place, more real than anything I had ever preached about or thing I'd ever thought about. Oh oh a throne room? I suppose you could say that. But that could be anywhere. That could be in Tanganyika. That could be anywhere in God's wonderful, wonderful, wonderful creation.
I have not seen God face to face, not in the way that everybody thinks he is. I have not seen some old man with a long beard judgin' the quick and the dead, but I have seen his light and I have seen it pourin' down on those that need it the most, and I say I have seen God face to face then. I've seen it tonight right here. Right here. I see it now right here, and I am humbled beyond belief to tell you that I myself am a product of this thing, am a reason for this thing that because I am here, God is shinin' that great, great light down upon this whole congregation. Who me? Just because I have led some people down on some march on some things that were already their right, does not make me a saint, but somehow I look like one right now in the light that is all about me.
When I first came to this man here, the one I'm worKing with here, and after I explained a little bit about what my vision was, he turned around and said, "you are St. Martin Luther King." I didn't know what to say to that. Me? The man of words, supposedly. The man who can talk anywhere, anytime. I could not speak. Martin Luther King, a saint? Why, in my particular congregation, we didn't really have any saints as such anyway. It was just the Lord Jesus and everybody else was just a brother and sister of the congregation. But suddenly when he spoke, when he spoke, when this young man turned around and told I was St. Martin Luther King, you know what, I could not deny it. I could not deny it. I realized I was a saint unto my people and then I knew and I said, "God, you have glorified me more than I ever, ever hoped for, for all I ever wanted to do was help and now I can help, oh yeah, I can help. No matter how I am called, I come. Why shouldn't I? Wouldn't you?"
But I am not here to speak about myself alone, save in the particular that it applies to each one of you that if somebody like me who felt like the great, great Gandhi that he had not accomplished a whole lot by the end of his life, don't only come here and I was rewarded. Oh, my people, that is why I'm here, not to speak about this man, Martin Luther King, but to speak about your own holy selves and what great, great things you are doin' every time you think something that can help another person. Every time that you smile at somebody and make them feel good, oh yeah, you at that point are Saint so and so, and I'd be the first one to tell you so.
When I first attained to the glory of God's heaven, there was nobody more surprised than me when I saw this incredible line of people, some of them, actually I'm embarrassed to tell you this, they was actually wavin' palm leaves, the way they did for the Lord. They was wavin' palm leaves for me, cheerin' me on. What did I do? At first I thought I was just part of another big parade. I had led so many. But no, suddenly it was all about . . . they were there to congratulate me. Many of them. And many of them were people that I had never known in this life who I had admired deeply but had not had the time to read their works to find out what they had been to accomplish.
And you know what? One of them was a man I had a great, great respect for but had not since my boyhood learned anything about him and I've come to find out this is a man that you all know as a very close friend and that one is Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle. He was right there on the line and he shook my hand and he held my hand and wouldn't let it go. I actually almost went down on a knee and said, "I know who you are. You wrote . . ." and he stopped me. He said, "It's not anything I wrote that's got me here. It was what I believed in. There's no death, and look here we are livin' proof of it here." And I said, "Yes, sir." And he said to me, "when you are ready, call on me. I have something to show you." And you know what? I didn't get around to callin' on the man for a long, long time as you would count time. And then one day it happened. And it happened because I was looking around for somewhere I could be the man I had been on earth. I could talk to somebody and tell him my thoughts on these things, you see I can't keep it silent, no I can't do that. And suddenly he came out of the blue. He was there and he said, "You're looking for a way to talk to those on earth, aren't you?" I said,"Yes, sir, that's all I want to do, now that I can really see things that I couldn't see on earth." He said, "there are ways." I said, "If you can tell me one, you would make me the happiest man in Creation."
Next thing I knew he had me in a room. It was a room not far away from this room where we are sittin' here. I was in a room not far away from here watchin' a man who I had never known but who was like a so-called dead talking to his dead friend next to him and the two of 'em havin' a conversation with a lady that happened to be the wife of one of 'em. And this man here that I'm talking through was listenin' to 'em as easy as a summer breeze tellin' the lady she was who had a little hanky, and I said, "Oh, Lord." And he said, "Oh yes." Sir Arthur said, "they exist these people. They're called mediums." And I jumped back, "Mediums?" And he smiled and said, "Yes." And suddenly my old strange thoughts about all that just went right away. And I said, "Glory to God for mediums." I need me one. Oh, do I need me one. And he said, "Well, one has to go through certain channels to show me what to do."
And I am ecstatic that I can come and tell you all about this. Not just my discovery, but what it means to you. What it means to you. That there are so many of over here that are so achin', there's no other word I can think of, achin' and there's no other thing in the spirit that can make a spirit ache except wantin' to do good and can't do that good. And we are looking for people like you to express that right on. So my dear friends, I know, I know, everyone of you can make yourselves open.
Now, there's a way to do it. You don't just sit down and open yourself, open your mind and then say I want to be a medium for somebody to come in here and talk to somebody. You cannot do it that way, for to do so invites trouble. No, what you do if you feel that this is your callin', you pray to God, you pray. You pray sincerely and say, "Heavenly, Father, if there is an angel up there that's got something worthwhile to say to my brothers and my sisters and that angel would not mind usin' this tongue, here it is, I lay it on the altar. Use me. Use me as thy holy tongue and mouth, that thy sacred words might be said to everybody down here. And pray that often and you watch how that's goin' to work for you, and especially work for us too.
I have said this before and I must say it again, that some of you here are feelin' a little bit useless. Some of you here might be comin' to a meetin' like this or a prayer meetin' like this one and, oh you feel all happy, and maybe you got a message and that made you happy because you felt there must be something there to it. Maybe you really, really got one by it. But then you go home and think that was good for them but what about me? You might be feelin' a little bit useless.
Never again. Never again. You have got something you can give, people. And it's right in your heart and it is of course the endless, infinite love that you can say to everybody that you know at any time of the day or the night, people, and make somebody feel good. Now, don't tell me you're useless. I cannot hear that anymore. You are all--- if you want to be the greatest givers of the Universe, right now. Oh yeah!
I'd used a phrase the other day and it amused my young friend here. I said you are all spigots without limits. How many of you here ever wanted to have a spigot without a limit? That's what you are. What is a spigot? It's like a faucet isn't it? It's something through which liquid comes. You are all of you as spigots without limits in that you have the grace of God flowin' through you at any time and you can send that anywhere you want to go. You can use the laser beam of your willpower and make it change something.
You know, I remember very clearly, I remember, invitin' my own dear aunt to come to one of our magnificent demonstrations of freedom. And she looked at me. "Martin, are you sure an old lady like me can make a difference?" "Aunty, oh yes you can. You've got to come down, please, won't you?"
She came. She came, that blessed woman. But how did I know! How did I know that day that the devil himself was gonna take ahold of those men and they were goin' to come at us with hoses of water to put out great fires, they had to use this on us? And do you what I felt when I saw that my aunty got knocked down by a hose and got rolled over again and again and again? And there was nothing I could do to stop it.
Did I hate at that moment? Oh, Satan was right there, "Come on there, Martin, what cha goin' to do now? You gotta hate these people that are doin' this to you. You got to hate them. You got to hate them. How can you not hate yourself for what you did bringin' your aunty down and I looked at him and in that second, I knew, I knew, I could not hate. I could not hate. And you know what, I broke down. Not in tears but in laughter. I'm sure some people thought I was takin' leave of my senses. I was laughin'', laughin' hysterically. And I jumped up quick as I could for they had knocked me down as well and I was laughin' out loud and you know what after a while everybody started laughin' so much so that I actually saw two of those men turn their nozzles and turn their water down.
Obviously, it wasn't working was it? They could knock our bodies down but we were laughin''. We held hands "We shall overcome,"we said louder than ever. I went and finally found my way to my aunty and you know what when I got to her, she was laughin' too.
And in the times to come, my people, you all must come to that place where you refuse to hate and you only laugh and you try to send the love you have to those that most need it. And you have that to give at every moment. Don't you be depressed because you don't have money in the bank to give your children or your mama or your family. You have love to give and that is something that is endless and when you get into the givin' mode and this goes on and on and on, you will come to a place where you are in the ecstasy of God.
So I don't want even one of you here to ever feel that you are worthless so should that terrible little thought creep up, all you got to do and set yourself down and "Oh no! no. oh no, Martin Luther King told me different. He told me I could send a little love somewhere and that make a difference and that make me not worthless at all but very very worthwhile. Can God make something that is worthless? Would God reside in a tabernacle that is worthless? In a temple made with his own hands. Oh, my people, let that word be stricken from your vocabulary and think instead of what you are, what are you.
That is the only reason why I brought up my story of how I was greeted. I did not expect this. Each one of you will be greeted in the same way. With hosannahs in the spirit. Tellin' you the difference your life has done that you cannot have lived on this life, on this world, and not made a huge difference for the good. Just your smiles. Just your laughter. Just your great and holy hearts are changin' this world right now, and that is the plan of God. Did you know that?
You might never have a chance to speak at a podium. You might never have a chance to address a great large assemblage as I was privileged to do. But that does not matter. You have already made a difference bein' who you are. The next breath that you draw is the breath of life and as you exhale it you are exhalin' love with it and you are changin' the world. And that is the truth. Mine eyes have beheld this truth. I had to come and tell somebody about it. Now I'm grateful to God that I've found a way to do it.
God alone will decide if the future I can talk to other people as well. But havin' spoken once, I am fulfilled. As you can see I am a happy man now. God bless you all.
The times that come indeed are shaky. But what is that? To those who are not susceptible to earth and its shakiness, you live beyond it all.
That is my message this night. Worthless never again, never again. That little kindness you did today, God saw it. That wonderful thought you had today how much you would like to help that person, but you don't have the money to do it. God saw it and he began to make it possible for some good to come out of that, simply by your intention. And that's all it took.
And God has blessed all of us this night by allowin' us to have some time together so we could talk about these things, and this night when you finally do take your rest, you gotta know that you are worth everything, you are worth eternity, you are worth the smile of God which it took to create you. You are worth angels that minister unto you. You are worth a thousand diamonds and rubies and far more than all that. For those things will one day come to dust and you ever win. You are worth the next sunrise. You are worth next baby that is born. You are worth it all. You are worth it ALL. That is my message.
